Nicole Northway is a Chicago-based artist originally from St. Louis. She came to Chicago to earn her MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2008. In 2011, finding a creative way around hard economic times, Nicole taught herself to make jewelry and opened her first Etsy Shop. Inspired by the creative community of artists, illustrators, and crafters, she opened One Strange Bird in October of 2011. One Strange Bird is a creative studio in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood that offers art classes to kids and adults, showcases talented artists, and sells indie crafts from around the country. Nicole currently runs One Strange Bird, teaching a variety of classes such as: intuitive painting, mixed media, and art journals.
Nicole's artwork has been recognized by the Union League Civic and Arts Foundation in the form of two first place awards and was the recipient of the CAAP grant in 2010. Her work was exhibited at the Thomas McCormick gallery, Contemporary Art Workshop, Hyde Park Art Center, Next Fair at Art Chicago, Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts in St. Louis, and the Sullivan Gallery amongst other places. Nicole also teaches for Columbia College and Depual University.
One Strange Bird is a storefront art center and store in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood. The store has locally goods, handmade gifts, and independently made products. The studio offers a wide variety of arts and crafts classes taught by local Chicago artists. Nicole opened One Strange Bird to provide an open and inviting creative space for people that are total beginners to seasoned creatives.
